Industry report: Navigating market dynamics with digital dominance

In 2023, global semiconductor sales reached USD 515.1 billion, with a slight decline of 10.3% compared to the previous year. However, a robust recovery is expected in 2024, driven by increasing demand for electronics, technological advancements and increased adoption of AI applications requiring more infrastructure.

The market size for semiconductors in the United States reached a value of more than USD 79.50 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.7% between 2024 and 2032, reaching a value of USD 167.92 billion by 2032.

With such high growth predictions and extensive demand for semiconductors, it is important to understand how top US semiconductor manufacturers are performing and meeting customer demand.

Performance of top US semiconductor manufacturers

Brand US Revenues Gross Profit Gross Margin Operating Margin Net Margin
Texas Instruments $17.52B $11.02B 62.90% 41.85% 36.97%
Infineon $16.07B $7.37B 45.88% 24.62% 19.48%
Analog Devices Inc. $11.57B $7.23B 62.48% 28.33% 24.34%
Onsemi $8.25B $3.88B 47.06% 30.76% 26.48%
Vishay $3.40B $0.98B 28.66% 14.32% 9.52%

The profitability breakdown of the top semiconductor brands in the US market for the CY23. Data captured in Feb 2024.

Profitability Powerhouses: Texas Instruments and Analog Devices exhibit high gross margins (62.9% and 62.48%, respectively) and strong operating and net margins. This indicates a strategic focus on high-margin offerings and efficient operations – consistent with profitability.

Cyclical Concerns: While Infineon maintains a net profit margin of 19.48%, it falls behind Texas Instruments and Analog Devices Inc. in terms of profitability. This observation supports cyclical concerns, as Infineon heavily relies on mature sectors like automotive and industrial. This reliance could make it susceptible to economic fluctuations, despite its commendable net profit margin.

Power Play: Onsemi is establishing itself as a key player in the profitable area of power semiconductors, evident from its competitive gross margin of 47.06%. Meanwhile, Vishay stands out for its diverse product portfolio, although it shows lower gross, operating, and net margins compared to its competitors. This suggests that while Vishay prioritizes cost efficiency and offers a variety of products, it faces challenges in maximizing profitability compared to Onsemi and other companies listed in the table.

Data captured in Dec 2023

  • Across these distributors, the top brands, Analog Devices & Texas Instruments, hold a strong grip on Integrated Circuits (ICs), capturing over 20% of the category listing share. This indicates strong presence of the top brand across the high demand categories.
  • Infineon focuses on Memory ICs to gain significant market share
  • Vishay & Onsemi have good presence in the discrete semiconductor category

It is evident from eClerx’s catalog & market share analysis that Analog Devices & Texas Instruments are the major semiconductor players. By focusing on the high demand integrated circuits category, these manufacturers have managed to gain significant market share.

Product availability in the market for the top semiconductor brands

Semiconductors continue to be high in demand and most manufacturers are struggling to meet these increasing needs. The same is true even for the large manufacturers like Analog Devices, Texas Instruments, & Infineon.

The chart below shows the overall availability of semiconductors across key electronic component distributors such as Digikey, Mouser, & Arrow based on data captured in December 2023.

Over 60% of the products offered by key brands continue to be out of stock across the US market. However, distributors like Mouser ensure higher availability by focusing on a select set of SKUs. Among all the top manufacturers, Texas Instruments, Analog Devices, & Onsemi have the best stock availability making them the preferred choice for customers looking to buy semiconductors.

Data captured in Dec 2023

  • Texas Instruments ensures good stock levels and also has more offerings to meet consumer demand.
  • Infineon, on the other hand, exhibits the lowest stock availability – specifically on Digikey.
  • Overall, Mouser tends to have the most extensive stock availability among distributors, while Arrow typically holds the lowest stock levels.

How quickly are the semiconductors shipped to customers?

Other than product availability, lead time is another important factor to compete in the market. The chart below provides an overview of the delivery times available across the major semiconductor players. As expected, almost all manufactures have a very high delivery time across distributors. However, Texas Instruments stands out with not just better availability but also faster lead time (avg. 15 days per SKU).

Analog Devices follows Texas Instruments with a 20-day lead time. Onsemi clearly struggles with delivery with an avg. delivery time of over a month—some of Onsemi’s products have a lead time of 230 days.
